What would be the best load for a .357 magnum revolver for home defense with low recoil and muzzle flash?
I have a Smith and Wesson .357 magnum revolver with a 2.5″ barrel. What would be the best .38 Special/.38 Special +P/.357 magnum load for personal defense that has a low muzzle flash and light recoil?
for the least amount of muzzle flash and recoil, a good 125 grain .38 special HP is just fine. +P adds more muzzle flash, and .357 mag adds horrendous muzzle flash in low light and harsh recoil in a snubbie.
The standard .38 HP will perform very well for inside the home self defense and offers the least amount of over penetration.
It would work well, and be very defensible in court, if you loaded the first 2 rounds up as standard .38 spcl HP, the next two rounds up as +P HP and the last two up as .357 125 grain HP. This will cover just about any situation you might face in self defense. Just be sure to contact local law enforcement and see what brand of ammo they would authorize for department use in those calibers, and use that. Again, this would protect you and be more defensible in court after a shooting.
