Car audio pros and experts question!?

Hi,

My upcoming car setup for my bmw is a JVC headunit, Rockford fosgate T20001 bd amplifier and maybe 1 Rockford T1 or T2 15″ or 2 Rockford T1 or T2 12″ subs, by the way what is better 1 15″ or 2 12″? where do i get more bang for the buck? but my main question is, do i need to upgrade anything in my car? like battery etc? i am not a carshow contestant, just for normal daily use and i dont really turn the system to the max, just average. 5***** for best informative answer. THANK YOU!

I’m going through the same process of upgrading to a massive sound system. Go with the 2 T2s in a ported box (unless you are crunched for space). You’ll make better use of your amp and you’ll get significantly more sound. These are my recommendations (most of which I am doing): ** Uprgrade the wiring of the “Big 3″ in your car (order about 12-15 feet of 1/0 gauge wire for it online for much cheaper than what car audio shops will charge you); **Find out the fuse rating of your amp, then look at the amperage rating of your current alternator. Most stock alternators are 65-90a. Your car needs about 50a to run all the electrical. Lets say your amp has a 150a total fuse. That means you need a high output alternator that will power 200a total (if you will never really push the system to full power, you can get away with a 150a alternator). So you’ll either need to get your current alternator rewound or buy a ho alternator. If you try to power that much with a stock alternator, your alternator will fry and you’ll have to get a new one anyway; ** Get a kinetik or optima battery. The hc1400 is a really good deal right now online. You need a battery like that to give it consistent and prolonged power.

Amplifier noise when signal is plugged in. Any suggestions as to whats wrong?

Recently, I made a DIY Lm886 kit, and everything measures right on the multimeter. It is also dead silent when I first plug it in indicating that I do not have a main hum or earth loop. My toroidal transformer is shielded and does not emit much electromagnetic fields, however when I plug it in with my source signal (computer) there is immediately audio noise. The noise frequency is random and does not sound like typical noise. It can also be drowned out if I put the input signal strength higher. Can this be caused by a cold solder joint? What are some ways to stop the audio noise? Thanks, any help is appreciated.

Make sure that the ground connection on the amp is the same than that of the computer. I mean the ground prong on each of the power plugs. Also ground the case of the transformer. I assume your amp is in a metal box providing shielding, and the box is also connected to ground (although the shield may not be really needed).
In addition to that, make sure that the cable connected to the computer is properly shielded, and the shield connected to the connectors.
If none of that helps, try to use a different source, like a CD or DVD Player. In some cases, the wall outlet may not be properly grounded.
There is another possible cause, some amps would oscillate with input applied. Since you built this one, if you had an oscilloscope and an audio generator, you could apply signal at different levels and frequencies, to check for possible instabilities. You would do that with different resistive and capacitive loads. Amplifiers that seem to stable with many combinations of input sources and output loads, are noticed to be unstable with, for instance, a square wave input signal. There is a lot that goes on the design of an amp.
Another thing, make sure you have connected decoupling capacitors across the amplifier’s power supply. You should use an electrolytic capacitor (i.e. 50 uF) in parallel with a ceramic capacitor (i.e. 0.1 uF), on both the + and – voltages if your amp requires dual power supply. Electrolytics have some inductance, so the ceramic would counteract that.
Add to your question, or email me if you need additional hints.
